According to Net Applications, Windows 7 has a 3.91% market share.

Net Applications obtains its statistics by monitoring the operating systems used by internet users.

To see the daily Windows 7 totals, go to:

http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=42&qptimeframe=D&qpcustom=Windows+7&qpsp=3911&qpnp=62&sample=7

For the 30 day period ended October 31, 2009, Windows 7 has a 2.15% market share. Windows Vista has an 18.83% market share and Windows XP has a 70.48% market share.

For those of you who are hanging on to Windows XP, its market share was 71.51% in September. I would suspect that it will take a couple of years for the XP market share to fall below 50%.

To see the complete market share changes for operating systems, browsers, search engines and other data for various time intervals, go to Net Applications at:

If you are purchasing a computer for your home or a student, Windows 7 is the way to go. Microsoft did a great job with Windows 7. However, if you are purchasing a computer for a business, make sure that it is compatible with the hardware and the processes used in your business.

  • Do You Need To Turn Off Your PC At Night?

This is a question that we have addressed twice per year. Over time, the answer has changed.

Older computers failed far more often. Turning your computer on or off put a strain on the computer, hard disk drive, and various other computer parts. Computer prices have come way down. Computer manufacturers can't afford to have computers that fail. The answer below applies to newer computers and may not apply to computers that are 4 years old or older.

According to the Microsoft Small Business Center, there is no reason to shut down your computer overnight. Just keep it on.

You will save $90 per year in energy costs if you place your computer into the "Hibernate" or "Sleep Mode" overnight.

Shutting down your computer will not save any additional energy. "Hibernating" or putting your computer in the "Sleep Mode" will save just as much energy at shutting down your computer. Even when your computer is shut off, it still uses a bit of energy. The only way to avoid any energy usage would be to shut down your computer and unplug it.

Using a screen saver does not save energy.

Turning your computer on and off will not wear it out. Computers are made to handle 40,000 on/off cycles.

The main disadvantage to turning your computer off at night is the two or more minutes for your computer to restart Windows. Restarting a computer in the "Hibernate" or "Sleep Mode" only takes a few seconds.

You can set the power savings settings on your computer to automatically go into a "Hibernate" or "Sleep Mode" after a specified period of idle time. Many computers have a keyboard button that will automatically place your computer into a "Hibernate" or "Sleep Mode."

If your computer is not currently set to automatically conserve energy, check Windows Help and search for "Power", "Hibernate", or "Sleep".

Cash Register Express POS Software from pcAmerica is Perfect for Gift Shops

Posted: 16 Nov 2009 01:16 PM PST

Cash Register Express is an award winning retail point of sale system designed to meet the unique needs of gift shops. CRE enables retailers to offer gift receipts, create gift registries, and sell gift baskets.

CRE offers customers the ability to use gift receipts. These receipts may be presented as proof of a transaction for the purpose of exchanging or returning merchandise or omitting certain information such as price.

Cash Register Express also offers gift shops the ability to create gift registries for birthdays, weddings, baby showers, holidays, or other special occasions. Customers can select items from store stock and distribute the registry. Upon the purchase of a listed item, CRE automatically updates the registry accordingly. In addition to providing valuable information to the buyer, the system helps prevent the receipt of duplicate or unwanted gifts thus eliminating the potential for returns to the retailer.

Many gift shops sell gift baskets otherwise known as “kits” in which you select a group of items to be sold together at a discounted price. With kitting capability, you can sell any number of items to a customer for one special price while tracking the individual inventory levels of each item that makes up the gift. Cash Register Express will deduct each component from inventory when this kit is sold. However, you can still sell the same inventory items individually.

Nation's Restaurant News

There was one article in Nation's Restaurant News that hit my eye that I wanted to share with you. Burger King has been heavily advertising a $1 double cheeseburger. It's been a great draw for consumers who have been eating them up. The problem is that many franchisees are not happy since their cost is approximately $1.15 per double cheeseburger.

Franchisees are suing. They are not happy that they are being forced to lose 15 cents per burger.

Burger King has been losing market share lately and added the three month promotion to get people back into their restaurants. That $1 bacon double cheese burger cost me about $6 (once you add the drink, fries and bacon).

Burger King expects a 20% jump in patronage due to this and other $1 specials. The thinking is that the $1 specials will get more people buying food. Will it bring in more profit?
