  • pcAmerica Moving to a New Phone Carrier

To better serve our customers, pcAmerica is moving to a new phone carrier (Optimum Lightpath) on October 1, 2009. Our phone numbers will remain unchanged. Our new carrier will give us more phone lines and increased telecommunication reliability.

It is possible that callers may have intermittent problems reaching us around Noon EST on October 1st for about an hour.

  • Nifty Online Timer

If you need a count-down timer, this is pretty nifty.

Go to:

http://e.ggtimer.com

And enter the amount of time you want to count down.

You can also start your timer immediately by entering any of the following (for example):

http://e.ggtimer.com/5minutes

Or http://e.ggtimer.com/2hours43minutes20seconds

Or http://e.ggtimer.com/30 seconds

I use the timer to try to limit the length of my phone conversations. You can use it to remind yourself to get off the internet or remind you about important appointments. It’s just nifty!

  • Tips for Hiring the Right Retail Help

You own a retail store (or restaurant). You have a great location. You have great products (or food). Everything is great except for your help.

Too many owners and managers don’t take the hiring process seriously. Many have no screening process and many just want a body.

Your employees are your future. Your employees are will shape the future of your store or restaurant. It doesn’t matter if you economy is good or bad. You need the best possible employees.

Here are some tips to help you get the best employees.

Too Little Time. The average store owner or manager spends far little time picking  employees. Far too many owners and managers make a instant judgment just to fill a position.

Your store is doing $1 million dollars in business and you are only willing to spend 10 minutes finding an employee.

You need some type of formal hiring process to help you find the right person for the right job.

Interview at least 5 candidates for a position. Even better, interview 10 candidates. Potential employees should know that you have a selection process. Your employee was especially selected for his assets. Employees that go through a selection process or more likely to stay longer than an employee chosen at random.

Ask Thoughtful Questions. Let’s say you are looking for a someone to help out in your clothing store. Do you like people? That’s not so thoughtful. Hopefully, all of your candidates would say yes. I more thoughtful question may be, how would you handle a customer in your store who is looking for a short. He picks out a real ugly shirt and ask you, “What do you think about this shirt?” How would you handle a customer that you see placing a pair of jeans into his shopping bag?

Pay More Money Than The Competition. If you own a convenience store, should you hire a $7 per hour employee who snarls at customers when ringing up a sale. Or, should you hire a $10 per hour employee who greets every customer with a smile and goes the extra mile when a customer asks a question.

Always Have Your Employee Fill Out An Application.

You can download a FREE application form at:

http://www.docstoc.com/docs/1020582/printable-job-application-forms

Or http://www.samplewords.com/professional-job-application-form.html

Even better, create an application form specific to your particular business.

Don’t be afraid to add additional questions to your application form.

For example:

Can you work on Saturday nights?

If you sell something for 97 cents and someone gives you a dollar bill and two pennies, what do you give them back?

Use the additional questions you may add to an application form to get your potential employees to commit to their future job.

Are you willing to clean the bathroom once per week?

Do you have any problem which will prevent you from coming to work at 9:00 AM?

Do you like working with children?

Always Check References? It’s very possible that you may decide to hire an employee that has never worked in a retail store before. Many retail stores find really fantastic employees who just graduated from high school or may be currently attending college.

Can you check references for a person who is new to the work force? I would say yes. At least your potential employee knows that you are checking. Speaking to an employees reference can always give you more insight. Speaking to a potential employees clergy person (if placed on a reference for) can give you one type of impression. Speaking to a potential employees cell mate, may give you another type of impression.

Always Have A Potential Employee Return To Your Business. From past experience, I know that about 50% of potential job applicants won’t come back for a second interview. Only your most serious candidates will choose to return.

You need some sort of hiring process to get the best possible person available for your job. Having a process makes your employee feel better about the job. He (or she) has been chosen, has a value, and survived the process.
