Coffee Shop Point Of Sale (POS) System

Posted: 05 Aug 2009 06:50 PM PDT

Coffee shops are one business type that face above average challenges in an ailing economy. The “$ 4 latte” is a purchase that several consumers consider removing from their budget. Most people are spending less money and are basing their purchases more on value than price. Below are three quick and easy ideas you may want to consider for your coffee shop that will help preserve and increase traffic…ideas that can be applied to almost any retail or restaurant business.

1 — Bake smaller versions of your pastries, and give a mini-pastry free in the morning with every cappuccino or latte purchase. This has the double bonus of making consumers feel like they’re getting more for their money, and at the same time will introduce your customers to your pastries that will result in them purchasing a full size dessert in the future. Your coffee shop point of sale system can print a message on the receipt.

2 — Select a coffee shop POS that has customer loyalty functionality built in. A plan as simple as a ‘Buy 6 lattes get the 7th free’ makes customers feel as if they are earning something when they buy coffees at your shop. Customers won’t want to miss out on their loyalty points — meaning they’ll return to your coffee shop to make their purchase. Restaurant Pro Express has integrated customer loyalty features that are free with no transaction fees.

3 — Nothing beats old-fashioned, friendly service. Choose cashiers and baristas that are naturally friendly and conversational. If you’re the owner or manager, spend some time out front personally greeting customers and thanking them for visiting your shop. People feel good spending their money at friendly places, and a great experience will keep them coming back for more.

What’s working in your business? Send us your ideas and we’ll post them on the blog!

PollDaddy.com

PollDaddy.com is a FREE site that allows you to take a survey.

It’s a great marketing tool for your business. Use it to find out more about your customers.

The FREE account allows you to set up surveys or polls with up to 10 questions. It allows 100 survey responses per month. If you want more, the price is $299 per year for 1,000 responses per month and $899 per year for up to 10,000 survey responses per month.

Most retailers will find that the FREE account will work fine.

Here’s what you can do with a poll?

Just to give it a try, I have created a small survey for those who read this newsletter.

Describe your retail or restaurant sales forecast for the next 6 months (compared to the same period last year). Is it more than 5% better, a little better, a little worse, or more than 5% worse.

Please go here and take part in the poll:

Pay In Cash and Get A Deal

More restaurants are encouraging patrons to pay in cash.

Luigi’s Trattoria in Farmington MA, for example, is offering a 20% discount off the bill for all customers paying cash.

80% to 85% of all customers were using credit cards. With the discount, only 20% to 25% of customers are using their credit cards.

Many other restaurants are following the cash trend and customers are taking advantage of it. It is really working well. Restaurants and customers are both benefiting.

Just a few words about accepting cash...Local governments may not allow cash discounts. You may be breaking your credit card agreement by offering a cash discount. Accepting cash does not relieve any business owner from the responsibility of charging sales tax and submitting those taxes to the proper authorities. All this is mentioned because I know what you are thinking.

Anyhow...the concept is taking off and you may want to think about it.
