What is a blog?

Go to the Wikipedia online encyclopedia for your answer at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog

A blog is your own personal or business website where you can make comments about your business, opinions, or ideas.

If you want a FREE personal or business blog, just go to Blog.com and start one.

Retail store and restaurant owners may want to start a blog to communicate with customers.

So, if your business needs some free marketing and publicity, you have a choice of Facebook, blogs, Twitter (all becoming extremely popular as  marketing tools).

A Few Words for Facebook Haters

I read and reply to all of my emails. I know that there are lots of people out there who absolutely despise Facebook. I’m sure that this goes for Blogs and Twitter too.

I am not advocating that every retail store and restaurant start a Facebook, Blog or Twitter account. I am just offering the prospect of using Facebook, Twitter or Blogs as an additional marketing tool.

Three out of four emails that I receive are very positive towards making use of Facebook within their businesses. It works for many businesses. I’m suggesting that you should educate yourself and consider giving it a try. If you believe that it’s a waste of your time that you can use for better purposes, perhaps assign or allow one of your employees to give it a try.

I’m now on the list of a couple of dozen readers using Facebook in their businesses. Feel free to add me as a friend and tell me more about your experience. You can find me on Facebook by searching for Howard Gosman.

...and for those of you who hate Facebook, I feel your pain. I limit my Facebook time to 5 minutes per day, but it can become addictive.

As a business owner, it’s a tool that you should understand. Unfortunately, it is difficult for retail stores to open up and survive based only on the traffic walking into your store. We all need new ways of attracting business.

Cashier Skims $100,000 From A Register

A Dobbs Ferry NY cashier skimmed over a $100,000 from Stop & Shop cash registers. That’s $392 per day for a year based on a five-day week.

The cashier figured out how to ring up a sale, place it on hold, and delete the transaction. It took the store more than a year to figure it out and report it to the police. (Cash Register Express has security that prevents transactions from being deleted.  Voiding an invoice is a permission that requires manager approval, and is tracked.)

The cashier could get 15 years in prison for the theft (and probably a job in the prison store).

SAKS Saleswoman Gets 90 Days for Stealing $1.4 Million

The SAKS employee rang up $27 million in sales between 2000 and 2006 and gave customers refunds and discounts to keep customers happy and keep them coming back to her.

She earned $400,000 in salary and commissions during her last year of employment. Apparently, SAKS did not have a good commission accounting system. Employees received their commissions but did not have commissions deducted when items were returned.

According to prosecutors, she gave refunds to customers for items that were never purchased. She was a great employee and had a great reputation for customer satisfaction and high sales.

It is quite probable that the SAKS type theft or the Stop & Shop type theft would never happen in a smaller store managed by the actual owner. Many store owners are watching their customers very carefully for shoplifting. About half of all thefts come from the employees. (Cash Register Express tracks commissions both on sales and returns.)
