FREE GPS

Not exactly, but almost.

Google offers FREE text directions on your telephone.

Should you need directions, and should you not have a GPS or computer available, Google offers a FREE service that will send a text message to your mobile phone. Although the Google service is FREE, your mobile phone provider may charge you 5 to 20 cents for each message that you receive (check with your phone provider).

To get your free text directions, send a text message to 466-453 (Google on your mobile phone keypad). Send Google your FROM and TO information. Within a minute, Google will send you one or more text messages with directions to your destination.

Google also offers FREE sports scores, movie information, glossary, language translation, stock quotes, weather, area codes, restaurant information, and lots of other miscellaneous information right to your phone. It’s all FREE from Google and free from your mobile phone provider if you have unlimited texting or 5 to 20 cents for each message that you receive depending on your mobile phone provider.

For more information on Google’s service, go to:

http://www.google.com/mobile/default/sms.html

If you are driving and/or don’t like texting, call 347-328-4667 (which spells out directions). You can use the FREE automated prompts to give your present location and get voice directions to your destination.

Increase Restaurant Sales and Efficiency with Caller ID

Here’s a great feature especially for restaurants. Attach Whozz Calling2 to your Restaurant Pro Express (RPE) computer.

· RPE will automatically identify who is calling.

· RPE will display previous orders for existing customers.

· Ring up a repeat order with the touch of a button.

· RPE will prompt for address and other info if a new customer is calling.

When a customer calls, you can answer the phone and already know who’s on the other side of the conversation. “Hello Nick. Another hamburger with extra pickle, French fries and a coffee?”

Save time by taking orders faster. You know what your customers have ordered in the past.

Reduce fraud and pranks by knowing who is calling.

There are no additional charges for caller ID features within Restaurant Pro Express. Your telephone provider may add a charge for caller ID. The caller ID box sells for $200 to $600 depending on the number of phone lines connected to the box. Call pcAmerica for more information.

Best Free Software (SyncToy 2.0)

I have a list of several really good free software programs which I will share in future newsletters.

SyncToy 2.0 is my absolute favorite FREE software program. It comes directly from Microsoft.

SyncToy helps you copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers.

With SyncToy, you can synchronize all of your documents, spreadsheets, photos, business data (such as Cash Register Express and Restaurant Pro Express data), and music with another computer on your network. You can also synchronize your files with an external USB hard drive or a USB flash drive.

SyncToy automatically copies the latest versions of your files from one location to another. For example, let’s say you have 120 word processing documents, spreadsheets and photos on your computer. When you use SyncToy, all of these files will automatically be copied from your source computer to your destination (another computer, external USB hard drive, or flash drive). Only those files that have changes will be copied.

SyncToy offers several synchronization options. Normally, you will want to copy only those files that have changed from your source computer to the destination. You can set SyncToy so that it will copy files from either direction to the other giving priority to the latest file. You can set SyncToy to delete files that are no longer on the source computer.

SyncToy is fairly easy to use. You can preview what is going to be copied before you actually do the copying.

For more advanced computer users, you can set up a SyncToy command file that can automatically do a synchronization at a scheduled time of day (using the Windows Scheduler).

I use SyncToy with every computer and laptop that I own. I synchronize all of my files between my two desktops and my two laptops. I use SyncToy with all the clients that I work with.

It’s FREE and it is my #1 favorite FREE software program.

Now here’s the CONS. If you are a below average computer user (that is, computers are not your thing), it may be difficult to set up and choose the proper files that you need to sync. If you fit into this category, I suggest that you find someone who can help you set up your synchronization.

Once your synchronization is set, you just press the SyncToy icon on your desktop, optionally PREVIEW your synchronization, then RUN your synchronization. Once it is set, it is easy to use.

FREE Windows 7 On The Way (Goodbye Vista)

Most of you are aware that Windows Vista has been a big bust. Windows XP is still king with 73% of the Windows market. Windows Vista is only 13% of the market (according to Wikepedia.org). In my opinion, Vista is about 15% better than XP, but not better enough to get XP users to switch.

The rumors are that Microsoft is coming out with Windows 7 before the end of the year. In short, Windows 7 is rumored to be an easier to use version of Windows Vista. It will also use less resources than Vista making it as fast as XP. Those who have been using the test version (beta version) are very positive towards Windows 7.

According to ComputerWorld, those who purchase a Vista computer after July 1st will be eligible to a FREE Windows 7 upgrade upon its release.
